In 1898 he took his son WG Watkins into partnership and the practice continued to play a major role in the architectural development of Lincoln with a total refurbishment of the mediaeval High Bridge (1901-1902), restoration of Greyfriars (1905 - now The City and County Museum) and additions to the Municipal Technical School (1908) amongst many other projects.

Bob Coombes became a partner in 1934 and the practice, re-named Watkins Coombes, continued to thrive on architectural work which was mainly based on public sector commissions, designing over 25 schools in the area as well as several buildings for Lincoln County Hospital. WG Watkins was also a Diocesan architect (a tradition carried on by Peter Manton) and was responsible for the re building of St Giles church from the original church at St Peter-at-Arches.

Around 1970 Watkins Coombes and Partners combined with Anthony Parker and Partners to form Parker Fairbairn with partners Tony Parker, Stan Barrell and George Fairbairn.

Health and school schemes continued including The County Hospital Maternity Wing, Operating theatres and involvement in the design of North Kesteven and The City Schools.
